I’ve been meaning to write a post for ages. I’ve been storing up a lot of good topics for discussion, stuff I’ve been meaning to chew over, things I’ve been wanting to put out there in terms of entertainment, and movies, and the industry, stuff I’ve been watching, reading, learning. And then I look at the headlines, and all of that is subsumed by FLAMES. It’s been, to put it mildly, hard to fucking focus.

So here’s my own headline. On October 30th, I won the inaugural Academy Gold Fellowship for Women! Lena Waithe and Hannah Gadsby and Annie Lennox were there! I got to wear a sweet Swarovski necklace! My dear sister came with me! We met the most amazing people and ate the most amazing spaghetti squash!

Lena Waithe is the biggest BAMF and a constant inspiration. She didn’t hold back in her conversation with Hannah Gadsby, whose Nanette was a complete game-changer for me. Annie Lennox performed “Here Comes the Rain Again” and “Sisters are Doin’ It For Themselves” and made the whole room shake. I sat next to the incredible Anika Noni Rose and we discussed the strides the industry has taken, and how insanely far it still has to go. It was powerful stuff.

We keep pushing. We keep fighting. We stay angry. I wrote this in my biography for the award: “My two little daughters are growing up in a country where being white and male is still the baseline, and the rest of us are still Other. My work is still mostly about angry brown women. That hasn’t changed, but maybe the world finally has. I’m ready.”

Anger is fuel.

It was a wonderful afternoon.
